Indonesia: Powerful Quake Kills Thousands, World Vision on the Scene

World Vision relief teams in Jakarta have dispatched emergency supplies to thousands of people left homeless by yesterday’s 6.3 magnitude earthquake in central Java, Indonesia.
Government reports put the death count at 2,900, with more than 3,000 others injured. Many bodies were still buried under rubble as authorities struggled to get aid into the region. The numbers of dead and injured will likely rise during recovery efforts.
World Vision plans to distribute essential non-food items — including blankets, tarps for shelter, and clothing — to provide immediate aid to affected children and families. Medical supplies will also be distributed to assist the wounded and support overwhelmed local hospitals.
The quake destroyed thousands of homes, according to World Vision staff in Indonesia, particularly those in the Bantul district in Yogyakarta Province. The province’s capital, the heavily populated royal city of Yogyakarta, is some 275 miles east, southeast of Jakarta on the island of Java.
Reuters News Service claims the quake struck just after dawn and was the third major tremor to devastate Indonesia in 18 months, the worst being the quake on Dec. 26, 2004 and its resulting tsunami which left some 170,000 people dead or missing around Aceh.
Indonesia sits on the Asia-Pacific's so-called "Ring of Fire" marked by heavy volcanic and tectonic activity.
World Vision’s first truckload of relief supplies is expected to arrive in hard-hit Yogyakarta Sunday morning, local time. World Vision relief staff are flying to the area to assess the extent of the need and will help distribute the emergency goods to survivors.
World Vision has helped more than 1 million tsunami survivors across Asia rebuild their lives, including thousands in the Aceh province of Indonesia.
